Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces Airport Technology and Efficiency Improvement Act

March 17, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) introduced the Airport Technology and Efficiency Improvement Act of 2023. This legislation would allow federal funding for terminal security technology neutral, allowing security solutions to be deployed across the United States, including light detection and ranging (lidar).

If enacted, the bill would authorize two pilot programs to secure non-movement areas and deploy technology to make airports more consumer-friendly and digitally connected. The pilot programs would prioritize sensors that can detect, track, and distinguish between objects without infringing on personal privacy.

“I am proud to introduce the Airport Technology and Efficiency Improvement Act of 2023,” said Congressman Nehls. “People have to get to the airport much earlier than when their flight is to go through security which can take hours due to long lines and the security process. This bill would help improve airport security and manage the flow of the lines in airports. We all know that traveling can be a stressful experience, and this technology has the potential for airports to decrease wait times at security points, manage crowd traffic, and protect critical infrastructure.”
