Rep. Troy E. Nehls Introduces the Let Experienced Pilots Fly Act of 2023
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R-TX-22) introduced the Let Experienced Pilots Fly Act of 2023. This bill would allow pilots to continue operations until they reach the age of 67. It would also require the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to submit a report to Congress regarding further age increases. The bill requires air carriers to maintain the rigorous medical and training requirements all other pilots in the industry are expected to maintain.
The United States is facing its worst pilot shortage in living memory. This pilot shortage has resulted in airlines cutting flights and searching for solutions. Unfortunately, many abled-bodied pilots are mandated to retire from airlines once they turn 65, but they are still allowed to pilot corporate jets and charter flights.
“I would like to thank Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) for introducing this legislation last Congress and working with me on this incredibly important issue. I’m proud to reintroduce this bill in the 118th Congress to address the glaring pilot shortage affecting Americans and airlines nationwide,” said Congressman Nehls. “We must prioritize the safety and effectiveness of airline travel to ensure that no travel disasters happen and that every person flying makes it home to their families.”
This legislation was cosponsored by Representatives Brian Babin (R-TX-36), August Pfluger (R-TX-11), Barry Moore (R-AL-02), Pat Fallon (R-TX-04), Dan Meuser (R-PA-09), Wesley Hunt (R-TX-38), Greg Steube (R-FL-17), David Rouser (R-NC-07), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-03), Doug LaMalfa (R-CA-01), Byron Donalds (R-FL-19), Tony Gonzales (R-TX-23), Dusty Johnson (R-SD-AL), Greg Murphy (R-NC-03), Chip Roy (R-TX-21), Clay Higgins (R-LA-03), Warren Davidson (R-OH-08), John Rutherford (R-FL-05), Carlos Gimenez (R-FL-28), Bob Good (R-VA-05), Glenn Grothman (R-WI-06), Eric Burlison (R-MO-07), Matt Rosendale (R-MT-02), Mary Miller (R-IL-15), Rich McCormick (R-GA-06), and Cory Mills (R-FL-07).
